Q&A with Kimberley

Q: What does mediation mean to you?

Mediation is a peaceful process through which families can work through their issues together. It is an opportunity for participants to really listen to one another and from there, craft their own unique settlement that works for their particular family.

Q: What do you think are the biggest misconceptions about mediation?

Sometimes people approach mediation with a pre-conceived solution or “position.” The very nature of mediation is that it enables discussion on so many different options and the opportunity to weigh the pros and cons of each. By keeping an open mind, participants can really achieve the most optimal solution for them as individuals, while at the same time weighing the impacts on everyone in the family.

Q: How to see your role as a mediator?

“ I take my role as mediator very seriously. It is important for me to really listen to and “hold” the unique perspective of every client I meet with. From there, I can begin to help empower clients towards their own ideal path forward. “

Q: How does what you do benefit families?

Because mediation empowers individuals and the new version of the family, it really enables families to move forward in their new type of arrangement in a safe and comfortable way. Ideally, it can show how things really can move forward one conversation at a time.

Q: What do you like most about what you do as a mediator?

I enjoy connecting with individuals and families on a “human” level. I “serve” families in the work that I do. I also enjoy the creativity possible…

Q: Why did you decide to become a mediator?

I wanted to be part of a process that really helped families and the issues they face in their lives. I felt that I could offer a calm and objective process.
